IIT Jodhpur Introduces a New-Age Degree Combining Management, Technology and AI

Indian higher education has spent decades organising itself around a single, rigid fork in the road: at 16, a student picks Science, Commerce, or Arts, and that choice quietly determines which institutions and which futures remain open to them. For a student who wanted an IIT degree, that fork has always led to exactly one door: JEE, and by extension, a Science-with-Mathematics background. Everyone else was simply excluded from consideration, regardless of ability.

That specific structural gap is what makes IIT Jodhpur’s newest undergraduate offering worth paying attention to. The institute has introduced a four-year degree that combines core management education with applied technology and artificial intelligence and, notably, it’s open to Class 12 students from any stream, with no JEE score required at all.

A degree built for how work actually happens now

The programme is called the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Management and Technology, and its premise is straightforward once you see it stated plainly: business decisions and technical decisions are no longer separable the way they used to be. A pricing strategy today is informed by a machine learning model. A hiring plan runs through workforce analytics. A supply chain decision depends on cloud-based logistics infrastructure. Yet most undergraduate education still teaches management and technology as two unconnected disciplines one for people who chose Commerce, the other for people who chose Science and cleared an entrance exam built around Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

IIT Jodhpur’s own leadership has been explicit about the thinking behind this. Prof. Avinash Kumar Agarwal, Director of the institute, has described the shift this way: education has long treated technology and management as parallel tracks, each individually rigorous but rarely taught in conversation with each other and the professionals who will matter most over the next decade are the ones who never had to build that connection after the fact, because their degree was structured around it from day one.

That’s the specific gap this programme is built to close not by watering down either discipline, but by teaching them as a single, sequenced curriculum.

Who can actually apply

This is the detail that makes the programme genuinely different from a conventional IIT undergraduate seat, and it’s worth stating precisely.

Eligibility requires Class 12 (or equivalent) from a recognised board, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks (50% for reserved categories) in any stream. There’s no Physics-Chemistry-Mathematics requirement, no JEE score plays any role, and there’s no upper age limit. Admission instead runs through an institute-administered qualifier test: 60 multiple-choice questions across Logical Reasoning, Verbal Ability, and Numerical Ability, completed in 120 minutes, with the Numerical Ability section pitched at arithmetic and percentages rather than advanced Class 12 mathematics.

In practical terms, this means a Commerce or Arts-stream student who has, until now, had literally no eligibility pathway into an IIT undergraduate degree, regardless of their board percentage or aptitude can apply on equal footing with a Science-stream student. It’s a genuinely new category of access into India’s most selective institutional ecosystem, not a relaxed version of an existing one.

Inside the curriculum: how the sequencing actually works

The degree runs 141 credits across 47 courses over four years, and what’s most telling about the design is how deliberately the technical depth is staged in relative to the business content, rather than front-loaded or bolted on as electives.

Year 1 establishes a common baseline for every student, regardless of their Class 12 stream Financial Accounting, Principles of Marketing, Microeconomics, and Foundations of Entrepreneurship sit alongside early technical grounding in Foundations of Computing, Database Management Systems, and Algorithmic Thinking in Business.

Year 2 is where the AI thread begins to thicken Machine Learning in Business and AI Applications in Business are introduced, taught alongside Macroeconomics, Design Thinking in Business, and Financial Management, so that technical concepts are learned in the same semester as the business decisions they’re meant to inform.

Year 3 is arguably the programme’s most distinctive stretch: Generative and Agentic AI in Business, Big Data and Cloud Computing, and Industry 4.0 are taught as core, non-optional coursework a combination very few undergraduate programmes in India offer at this depth, in engineering or commerce alike alongside Competition and Strategy, Business Research and Analysis, and Operations Management for Managers.

Year 4 shifts toward strategic leadership: Corporate Governance, International Business, Human-AI Collaboration at Work, and Technology Forecasting and Assessment round out a curriculum that ends not with a narrow technical specialisation, but with the ability to lead in an environment where AI is already embedded into everyday business decisions.

The structure also follows the flexibility built into India’s National Education Policy 2020 students who need to exit early leave with a recognised credential rather than nothing: a Certificate in Business Fundamentals after Year 1, a Diploma in Management and Technology after Year 2, and a full Bachelor’s degree after Year 3, with the complete Honours degree and IIT Jodhpur alumni status awarded on completing all four years.

How the degree is actually delivered

The programme runs online, with each course combining recorded lectures and a live weekly session taught by IIT Jodhpur faculty, roughly 15 hours of academic contact per week across six courses per semester. Live sessions are scheduled over weekends, and the format includes two optional on-campus immersion modules at the IIT Jodhpur campus across the four years, giving students in-person exposure to faculty and peers without requiring a fully residential commitment.

That format matters for who the programme is realistically reaching. It’s not just built for a Class 12 student choosing their first degree it’s genuinely usable by a student already enrolled in another full-time course who wants to add real technical and business depth alongside it, a competitive exam aspirant who doesn’t want a preparation year to leave their academic record blank, or a working professional who wants an IIT credential without pausing their career.

Where the curriculum is aimed, career-wise

The degree’s design choices line up closely with where entry-level hiring in India is actually growing. Roles like Business Analyst, Product Management Associate, Management Consultant, and Operations & Supply Chain Analyst are among the categories the curriculum most directly prepares graduates for and several of them are seeing meaningful year on year growth, with Product Management Associate roles alone growing at roughly 87% year on year, and Business Analyst roles projected to grow around 34% by 2030, according to figures published on the programme’s official page. Companies named among active hirers for these profiles include Deloitte, EY, KPMG, Amazon, Flipkart, TCS, and Infosys spanning consulting, technology, and operations functions.

It’s worth being precise here: the programme does not represent a regular on campus placement drive, and it doesn’t promise guaranteed employment outcomes. What it offers instead is a curriculum deliberately built around the specific combination of skills business reasoning plus applied AI and data fluency that employers in these growing categories are actively short of.

A programme that grew faster than expected

What’s notable, even this early in the programme’s life, is how quickly interest in it outpaced initial planning. The combination on offer a JEE-free, stream-agnostic route into an IIT undergraduate degree, built around exactly the hybrid skill set the current hiring market is rewarding solved a gap that had simply gone unaddressed until now. Interest came from precisely the students this structural gap had shut out: Commerce and Arts-stream toppers with no prior IIT pathway, students already pursuing a parallel degree, and working professionals looking for a credible technical and business credential without leaving their jobs.

The bigger picture

What IIT Jodhpur has actually introduced here isn’t a rebranded BBA with a few AI electives attached, and it isn’t a watered-down version of a B.Tech. It’s a genuinely new category a management degree that treats AI and data fluency as core, not supplementary, delivered under the credibility of an IIT, and opened to a pool of students the IIT ecosystem has never had a door for before.

Students weighing their options after Class 12, or already partway through another degree and looking to add real depth alongside it, can find the complete eligibility criteria, curriculum, and admission timeline o IIT Jodhpur’s official programme page.
